SNAKES:
Antaboga is the world serpent of Balinese mythology. At the beginning of time only Antaboga existed. by means of meditation the great serpent created the world turtle Bedawang. In the sky is a serpent Taksaka and a group of snakes know as the Awan who appear as falling stars.
Basuki is a giant serpent of Balinese mythology. He lives in the underworld cave that is ruled over by the god Batara Kala and the goddess Setesuyara.
Naga Padoha is the great sea serpent of South East Asian mythology. It sought to destroy the land created by Batara Guru, a form of the god Shiva, however in his incarnation as a hero figure, Batara Guru managed to control the serpent pressing him down to the lower regions of the cosmos.
Nagas are spirits who take the form of serpents in the mythology of South-east Asia. The great serpent Sesha, on whose coils the god Vishnu rested in the intervals between creation was served by nagas. Mucilinda, in buddhist belief was a naga king who sheltered Gautama Buddha from the weather. In Tibetan Buddhism, the nagas are said to guard the Buddhist scriptures.
DRAGONS:
Rangda is a ferocious female demon of Bali with a fiery tongue, pendulous breasts and rolling eyes. She was the leader of a band of witches and was a creature of darkness, sickness and death. Barong is the spiritual male dragon with lion features, the opponent of Rangda, he represents day, light and the forces of goodness. They had many great battles presented as dances in Bali and other parts of South-east Asia.
BIRDS:
Tjak is a bird with a human face who inhabits the perfumed sky in Balinese mythology. The ancestors live in a flame-filled heaven beyond the perfumed sky and beyond that is the abode of the gods.
Ara is a spirit who takes the form of a bird in a creation myth of the Iban, one of the Dayak peoples of Borneo. The bird floated at the beginning of time in a boundless ocean and plucked an egg from the water, to create the sky, Irik the other bird formed the land from the other egg plucked from the same ocean. However because the earth was too large for the sky, the two birds had to squash it until it became the right size, thus creating mountains, valleys, rivers and streams. They then created human beings from the soil and gave them life with their bird-song.
Otshirvani is a spirit of the god of light, in the form of a bird who is set to fight Losy a mythological Siberian serpent who killed all mortal beings by covering the world with poison. Otshirvani seized Losy in his claws and threw him against the world mountain killing him.
TURTLES:
Bedawang is the balinese world turtle whom the world serpent Antaboga created. The world turtle forms with snakes and a stone, the lid of the underworld.
DOG:
Kimat is the dog of Kadaklan, the god of thunder according to the mythology of the Tinguian people of Luzon in the Phillipines. Kimat is the lightning, he bites whatever Kadaklan chooses.
MONKEY:
The Kappa in Japanese mythology are a race of monkey demons with webbed hands and feet and yellow-green skin, they wear shells like tortoises on their backs. They who are fond of blood and lure humans and other creatures to the depths of their ponds and rivers where they feed on them. They are malicious creatures who can be bribed.
CHICKEN:
Manuk Manuk in Sumatran mythology is a fabulous blue chicken which belonged to the supreme god. One day the chicken laid three gigantic eggs from which emerged three gods who created three levels of the universe, heaven, earth and the underworld.
HORNED OXEN/HORSES:
The Oni are horned oxen or demons who came to Japan from China with the arrival of Buddhism. They have three fingers, three toes and sometimes three eyes and are cruel and lecherous and sweep from the sky to steal the sounds of people who are about to die. The oni of hell hunt down sinners and take them away in their chariot of fire to Emma-O the ruler of the underworld.
