Ancient Greeks and Romans were amazingly creative people, they looked at stars and saw pictures, they looked at the weather systems like sun and lightning and saw chariots and Zeus the Thunderer. But what of Australia and the Asian region, what myths and legends exist across this region to seek to explain evolution and how do these myths and legends shape the culture of some of the countries in the region?
This website seeks to explore certain myths and legends within China the so-called “Mother civilisation of East Asia” and compare some with myths and legends which have been passed down within indigenous Australia.
Through my research I have come to realise that across the Asian region but most notably in China, myth and reality are never really separated. Figures are made into gods and myths are recounted as history. Many of the distinguishing features of Chinese life in its earliest days in the 4th century BC have been passed down in recognisable form to this century. The achievement of such a striking degree of stability in their social system is one of the Chinese people’s most remarkable accomplishments. In contrast, European settlers arrived in Australia in 1788 and in less than 230 years they have proceeded to destroy most of the indigenous culture of this land.
